![]() It was filmed and recorded at MTV‘s Sony Music Studios in New York City. “Hey everyone! KISS anniversaries really do mean a lot to me and one that really stands out in my career for those 12 years is one that happened on August 9th, 1995. Kulick stated (as transcribed by Sleaze Roxx): KISS‘ MTV Unplugged show started with the current band line-up at the time of Stanley, Simmons, guitarist Bruce Kulick and drummer Eric Singer before Frehley and Criss rejoined Stanley and Simmons for two songs (“2000 Man” and “Beth”) and the evening ended with all six musicians performing the songs “Nothin’ To Lose” and “Rock And Roll All Nite.” Kulick released a video on his YouTube channel today where he shared his recollection of that historic night. Today is the 25th year anniversary of KISS‘ historic MTV Unplugged show that saw KISS mainstays Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons reunite with original band members Ace Frehley (lead guitar) and Peter Criss (drums) for a live performance, which was the first time they performed live together in 16 years. I mean, don't get me wrong - it was awesome & it was perfect.Bruce Kulick recalls not sleeping the night before KISS’ historic MTV Unplugged show 25 years ago Then there was Ace's acoustic-guitar-playing/shooting-the-shit-session with Gene for a Gene Simmons Vault sale a couple of years ago which was sloppy for sure. The uncut version of Unplugged has plenty of goofs, mostly Gene's but all six of them are imperfect, it's Gene that goofs up enough where Domino has to be restarted a couple of times The boy playing the drums was a high point of the day, the girl singing the Kiss Robert Palmer track with the lame sex lyrics - not so muchįor MTV Unplugged Ace pretty much nailed it - as did all six of them. I was at the 1995 official Kiss convention at Cobo where the little girl sings X in Sex & her little brother also drummed Do You Love Me. Seems like you might be conflating a few events here, Miss Kitty - the 1995 official Kiss convention at the Cobo Convention Center, Kiss doing MTV Unplugged & Ace's appearance at a Gene Simmons Vault gig And they have that creepy video of a little girl singing "Let's put the X in Sex". Youtube used to have up a video of their outtakes that showed all their "fuckups". How about Tommy Thayer? Coffee and spaghetti ain’t gonna serve itself.Īpologies… & tip of the hat. Unfortunately he was completely outshone by Bruce. Ace on an acoustic playing lead is NEVER going to be a good thing in a live setting & this was Ace doing his best that he could at the time. But we all know he wasn’t in a great place to begin with coming into this concert & it shows. Nothing to Lose where he’s starts the solo & flubs several notes going up the scale in both of the first 2 bars, while Bruce then hits every note.Īgain… I’m an ACE fan, & even with all the flaws I like his performance overall. His vocals are great throughout.īeth where he starts with a nice little melodic solo but then tries some quick picks that aren’t relevant & are completely sloppy Sloppy, choppy playing where he fudges notes while trying to play a Triplett. Please name these “fuck ups” that you hear.Ģ000 man first solo. … managed to make it through with not TOO MANY fuck ups.” I own all the related “media” and I WAS THERE… Peter Criss - He was humble & happy to let Singer take the lead (who was very generous to PC all the time) & then nailed his vocal parts.Īce Frehley - Ace was obviously not in a great place in his life but managed to make it through with not too many fuck ups. Gene Simmons - Sure he messed up a ton of lyrics & bass parts but he was still into the performance in a big way. One of his best gigs & brought it when really needed. Paul Stanley - Perfect vocally, great guitar playing. He’s a beast.īruce Kulick - what he does with an acoustic guitar on EVERY song is just magic. It’s a shame that KISS never encouraged him to play that way in the future. ![]() I have to think they’d have gained a lot of new fans who heard KISS music for the first time played in an acoustic setting.Īll that being said, who do you think are the stars of that show? For me, as an Ace fan first & foremost, I’d rank the performances like this:Įric Singer - He steals the show imo & just brings to life all the early tunes. But that show produced some “new” stars to the world & I’ve always wondered what would have happened after that show if the current lineup had stayed together. Then Unplugged happened & all that came with it, most obviously the Reunion. I love almost all of it & I think it’s worth discussing who the stars of this game changing show are.Īs an “Original Four” fan it took me a while to accept all the lineup changes but once Bruce joined, & especially once they’d recorded Revenge, I became a huge fan of the “new” Group. Such an amazing show from beginning to end. ![]()
